Meeting at BSO 02/26/12

The meeting will be at the Broward Sheriff's Office on 02/26 at 10 AM. Coffee, bagels and cake provided. Dr. Michael Fish with JFS Kolot will be on hand to provide us with information about domestic violence in the Jewish community.

Familial Dysautonomia Fundraiser

My son Justin is sponsoring a fundraiser in honor of his friend Danny who has FD. There will be a DJ Party for teenagers and their families at the New York Comedy Club on February 20th at 7:00 P.M. The Club is located at 8221 Glades Road in Boca Raton. Donations are $15 per ticket. Additional contributions are welcome. Contact Justin at justjeter2@bellsouth.net.

FD is an abbreviation for Familial Dysautonomia, a rare, fatal, genetic, neurologic disease present at birth. Kids with FD live in very unstable bodies. All their internal functions are unpredictable. They are prone to wide swings in blood pressure and heart rate, rapid decline of oxygenation and life-threatening autonomic crisis. The children who are susceptible to this disease are the product of parents who are both from an Ashkenazi Jewish background.

Broward County Law Enforcement and K-9 Memorial

On Saturday, February 26th, the Police Honor Guard of Broward County will be hosting a groundbreaking ceremony at Markham Park in Sunrise, Florida. There will be a full day of events including a 5K run/walk which starts at 7:00 A.M. Plantation Police Officer Chris Stilwell is the Director of the Honor Guard. He will be making a presentation to the SFSS at our next meeting on Sunday, February 27th. For more information, go to www.honorguardinc.com.

Holocaust Event

On December 15th, I attended the Broward County Student Awareness Day event at the Broward County Convention Center. The event was hosted by the Holocaust Documentation and Education Center in Hollywood, Florida. Hundreds of high school students had an opportunity to sit down and converse with Holocaust survivors. It was an incredible experience for all. I will be arranging to have one of the survivors speak with us at the February meeting.

Annual Chanukah Party

On December 5th, 2010 we held our annual Chanukah party at the Fort Lauderdale Fire and Safety Museum. The Webermans provided us with potato latkahs and macaroni & cheese. Gift cards were collected for the children at JAFCO. We had a terrific time. Thanks to all of our members who volunteered their time to make this a successful event.
